{"id":29,"date":"2019-01-13T14:00:26","date_gmt":"2019-01-13T14:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mycours.es\/ems\/?page_id=29"},"modified":"2022-04-14T13:40:36","modified_gmt":"2022-04-14T13:40:36","slug":"looting-the-archives","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/mycours.es\/ems\/looting-the-archives\/","title":{"rendered":"Assignment: Remix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Assignment<\/strong><br \/>\nCreate a found footage\/video collage work by appropriating and remixing audio, text and video material.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You are not allowed to shoot new footage.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid material that is already a remix or already video art.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid very popular sources like big budget movies, look for something that hasn&#8217;t been remixed before.<\/li>\n<li>All the footage should be from the same genre\/era\/resolution.<\/li>\n<li>Duration 30s &#8211; 3min.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Strategies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&gt; Formal: use unconventional editing techniques and radically transform a single source.<br \/>\n&gt; Free associations: let the archive guide your process, juxtapose images based on visual or conceptual resonances.<br \/>\n&gt; Music video: edit the material to a found soundtrack (instrumental music only)<\/p>\n<p>I strongly discourage trying to make a coherent narrative piece (it&#8217;s very hard) and &#8220;supercuts&#8221; juxtaposing many instances of a certain trope (it takes too long to find the material).<\/p>\n<p><strong>In class exercise: Free association game<br \/>\n<\/strong>(Possibly in breakout groups of 6)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Each student in turn starts by saying a word that could be the theme of your piece<br \/>\nAnother participant will immediately respond with a word that comes to their mind<br \/>\nAll the participants will continue the chain of associations<br \/>\nThere is no particular order, the only rule is whoever spoke can&#8217;t come up with the next word.<br \/>\nContinue until everybody contributed at least once (twice if in breakout groups).<br \/>\nThe student who started the chain writes down all the words they remember. They will use them as search terms when looking for video material.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Thursday January 20th<\/strong><br \/>\n-Choose a strategy among the ones suggested here and in class &#8211; you can try something completely different, just find a system, a process. Write a paragraph describing the method: what? how? why? It&#8217;s going to be a full lab day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Tuesday February 1<br \/>\n<\/strong>The project is completed and uploaded to your Vimeo or Youtube account.
