Designing novel games is hard, almost all games are build on the top of proven genre, features, and gameplay concepts.<\/p>\n<p>Think of it as:<br \/>\nAsteroids except [one feature is different]<br \/>\nAsteroids plus [another game or genre]<br \/>\nAsteroid with [another feature found in another game]<\/p>\n<p>The space theme can change if the new gameplay doesn&#8217;t make sense for it. Don&#8217;t start from a new theme.<\/p>\n<p>Graphics should be done after the gameplay is established.<br \/>\nKeep it minimalistic and iconic like the original: us bright lines on dark background, or use flat colors and simple shapes unless you have specific reasons to *not* do so.<br \/>\nOn the visual side this is an exercise in making game art that conveys information and makes the game readable.<\/p>\n<h3>Asteroids<\/h3>\n<p>Try an online port here:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/freeasteroids.org\/\">https:\/\/freeasteroids.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the first arcade games, it came out in 1979.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not a fan of the game, and I\u2019m not nostalgic. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I just like it as an example because it\u2019s simple, v<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ery easy to break down conceptually, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s a good way to introduce many game programming patterns.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But also and incorporates elements of the first digital game ever Spacewar! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which was created at the MIT in 1962. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we are basically starting from the beginning of the history of video games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lyle Bickley explains the PDP-1 (and we play the original Spacewar!)\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1EWQYAfuMYw?start=974&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll introduce some concepts of game design.<br \/>\nAnd we\u2019ll use these concepts as jumping points to brainstorms idea for your project<\/p>\n<h3><b>GAMES AS FORMAL SYSTEMS<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Games are based on action so one way to talk and think about games is through <strong>verbs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the verbs used in asteroids?<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019m talking about the actions. Basically: what does the player do? The book introduced important terminology in game studies. He describes four \u201cplay forms\u201d that are the basis for the enjoyment of games.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These components can be present in different degrees in each game:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Agon, or competition.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Present in skill based, competitive game like sports or chess.<br \/>\n<\/span><b><\/b><b>Alea, or chance.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Present in gambling games like slot machines or roulette.<br \/>\n<\/span><b>Mimicry, or mimesis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Present in role playing games or pretend games.<br \/>\n<\/span><b>Ilinx, or vertigo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Present in perception altering play, like merry go round and visually intensive videogames.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>How are these components manifesting in Asteroids?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Can you imagine a version of Asteroids that boosts the less dominant components like chance or vertigo?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Humanoid Asteroid\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/16939158?h=3d282a26b5&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spheres of Chaos v2.10 (Windows game 2007)\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wEQC-jXs5Us?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>LUDUS vs PAIDIA<\/h2>\n<p>Callois also differentiated between two kind of games:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ludus<\/strong> &#8211; structured activities with explicit rules (competitive games)<br \/>\n<strong>Paidia<\/strong> &#8211; unstructured and spontaneous activities (child play, sandbox, toys, creative games)<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRAINSTORM: REIMAGINE ASTEROIDS AS A FREE PLAY ACTIVITY<br \/>\n<\/strong>How can the gameplay be turned into a non-competitive, sandbox, open ended, or \u201ccreative play\u201d game.<\/p>\n<h2>Scope<\/h2>\n<p>Scope is the planned complexity of a game, in terms of features, content, and systemic detail.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s quantitative and qualitative and usually defined in a game design document.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s about time, experience, and budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Always ask yourself:<br \/>\nWhat do you really need for the game to \u201cwork\u201d?<br \/>\nWhat do you really need for the game to differentiate itself?<br \/>\nWhat do you really need to engage your target player?<br \/>\nWhat do you really need to make your vision a reality&#8230;<br \/>\n*in the time, with the knowledge, and with the budget, you have your disposal?<\/p>\n<p><strong>FEATURE CREEP<\/strong><br \/>\nAdding more features after the scope has been defined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OVERSCOPING<\/strong><br \/>\nAiming for more than you can achieve in the given timeframe.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid overscoping:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay away from content heavy projects (content is graphics, visual assets)<\/li>\n<li>Identify the core mechanics immediately<\/li>\n<li>Try to reduce them even more<\/li>\n<li>Make a feature complete prototype with all the core mechanics as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of adding new elements from the beginning explore all the possibilities created by these mechanics and then add only a new one at a time. If it opens up a new space of possibility combining and reinforcing the existing ones, then it\u2019s a feature worth pursuing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Assignment<\/h2>\n<p>Pick the idea that seems most promising &#8211; and feasible in one week.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s discuss it:<br \/>\nDoes it have a \u201cunique selling point\u201d?<br \/>\nCan it be done within a week?<br \/>\nCan you cut any unnecessary parts?<br \/>\nCan the gameplay support a theme\/story\/visuals that immediately grabs people\u2019s attention?<\/p>\n<h3>Bonus: Remixing \/ modding \/ mashing up classic games<\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at other strategies from non-asteroid variants.<\/p>\n<p>Adding modern technology to old concepts, fluid dynamics<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Plasma Pong Gameplay\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yGJO5bydch4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
