{"id":319,"date":"2016-09-07T15:05:13","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T15:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2016\/?page_id=319"},"modified":"2016-09-14T16:44:40","modified_gmt":"2016-09-14T16:44:40","slug":"unity-maya-microtutorials","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2016\/unity-maya-microtutorials\/","title":{"rendered":"Unity &#038; Maya Microtutorials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A collection of short tutorials added throughout the semester<\/p>\n<h1>Maya to Unity basic workflow<\/h1>\n<p>Unity can work with .mb files but it&#8217;s really an automated fbx conversion.<br \/>\nI recommend creating assets in a separate folder since deleting assets deletes the actual files and you may want to have backups and intermediate version as well.<br \/>\nMy suggestion is to create a messy production folder outside of the Unity project.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you install and activate Maya&#8217;s fbx and 3ds import plugins.<br \/>\nThe plugin manager is cunningly hidden in Windows > Settings\/Preferences<br \/>\nThe plugins are cryptically named: fbxmaya.mll and 3dsImport.mll check loaded and autoloaded<\/p>\n<p>-File import > fbx<br \/>\n-Mesh > Optimize > Cleanup, especially non-manifold geometry, lamina faces<br \/>\n-UV mapping: modeling > UV > Automatic<br \/>\n-Use mesh > combine and separate to group and split objects that need to be manipulated independently (it really depends on the project)<br \/>\n-edit > delete by type > history<br \/>\n-(recommended) Select each of the objects and rename their transforms and\/or mesh in the attribute editor<br \/>\n-move the pivot to the where you want it (usually touching ground). Select object, move tool > tool settings (double click on the move tool) > edit pivot > translate the pivot with the help of snap to grid or points<br \/>\n&#8211; Move the object you want to export to the center of the grid<br \/>\n&#8211; select the object and file > export selection as fbx to the Unity asset folder. If there are textures check &#8220;embed media&#8221;<\/p>\n<h1>Creating a skybox material<\/h1>\n<p>Find a panoramic image in one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.unity3d.com\/Manual\/class-Cubemap.html\">cubemap formats accepted by unity<\/a><br \/>\nConsider them as a starting point, purely photographic stuff will not look good but they may be a base or reference for more stylized ones obtained with filters or hand painting in photoshop.<\/p>\n<p>Put in in the assets folder<br \/>\nSelect it > inspector import settings > texture type: cubemap<br \/>\nCreate new material<br \/>\nSelect material > inspector > shader > skybox\/cubemap<br \/>\nLighting panel > Assign the material to the skybox<br \/>\nMake sure that the camera &#8220;clear flags&#8221; is also set to skybox<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A collection of short tutorials added throughout the semester Maya to Unity basic workflow Unity can work with .mb files but it&#8217;s really an automated fbx conversion.
