You can find plenty of examples online. Given the small teams and the experimental nature of the project I prefer to let the projects evolve more organically over the semester.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of a detailed document I&#8217;d like you to define up 3 to 5 &#8220;design pillars&#8221; for your project.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design pillars contain the core emotions, objectives, and any other element that defines what experience is the game trying to deliver.<\/li>\n<li>They shouldn\u2019t be specific features nor plot elements, center them on the player experience.<\/li>\n<li>Design pillars allow the team to understand the overall picture of your game, to be on the same page.<\/li>\n<li>Design pillars should be used to guide the design of the game and serve as a filter that any new idea must go through.<br \/>\nYou should always ask yourself: does this mechanic\/idea serve or fit into the pillars of our game? If the answer is \u2018No\u2019 then it may be best to remove it.<\/li>\n<li>The pillars should be somewhat rigid, assume you won&#8217;t change them over the semester.<\/li>\n<li>The pillars should suggest some of your game&#8217;s &#8220;hooks&#8221;, what makes it stand out, what can catch people&#8217;s and media attention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You should start discussing them today but take more time to think about it and post them on your channel before next Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Design pillars&#8221; is a recent buzzword in game development (it was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamedeveloper.com\/design\/design-pillars-the-core-of-your-game\"> popularized by this article)<\/a> so you may not find a lot of examples. Is this world cool? Do I want to stay here? Do I want to learn more about it?\u201d<br \/>\nJoseph Staten: &#8220;One lesson that\u2019s critical is that the most important stories we tell aren\u2019t going to be told by us. They\u2019re going to be told by players \u2013 their personal legends built from shared adventures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Bunch of Fun Things to Do<\/strong><br \/>\n(after describing a three-man dungeon run in detail):<br \/>\nJoseph Staten: \u201cAnd just like that, The Dust Palace becomes part of my story. The breadth and depth of Destiny\u2019s world encourages me to find my own adventures. It\u2019s a place where I can leave my mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rewards Players Care About<\/strong><br \/>\nJones explained how the game will have \u201ca lot of great things to earn, find, and make,\u201d reiterating that \u201ceverything you do in Destiny earns rewards.\u201d Besides unique weapons, every piece of your kit will be your own, from your helmet to your cape to your armor pieces to your face. Their goal, he said, is to keep players coming back \u201cday after day, week after week, month after month, [and] year after year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A New Experience Every Night<\/strong><br \/>\nJason Jones: \u201cImagine you could spend an hour and accomplish something, but you get distracted from doing the thing you meant to do when you logged on. Every time you sit down to play Destiny you have a different experience than last time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shared With Other People<\/strong><br \/>\nJason Jones: \u201cEverything that\u2019s fun to do is more fun to do with your friends.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enjoyable By All Skill Levels<\/strong><br \/>\nJason Jones: &#8220;All core activities can be enjoyed by a novice player, that&#8217;s not hard. What\u2019s hard is keeping it interesting for your advanced players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enjoyable by the Impatient and Distracted<\/strong><br \/>\nJason Jones: \u201cPlayers don\u2019t want to work hard, they don\u2019t want to read, and they don\u2019t\u2019 want to go to the Internet to figure out our bullshit.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Eco<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1584\" src=\"http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/eco-1024x499.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/eco-1024x499.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/eco-300x146.jpg 300w, http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/eco-768x374.jpg 768w, http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/eco-1536x748.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/eco-1200x584.jpg 1200w, http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/eco.jpg 1653w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Economy<\/strong><br \/>\nAsynchronicity, allowing players to collaborate across time and space,<br \/>\nDiscoverability, making it easy for players to find the information they need about how to participate in the economy.<br \/>\nInvolvement, incentivizing players to work together, especially between different levels of experience.<br \/>\nOrganization, allowing players to organize labor seamlessly through the interests of many parties, with lots of data on progress and economy state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ecology<\/strong><br \/>\nVisibility, players should be granted powerful tools (the stats system) to understand how the ecology system works and how players are influencing it.<br \/>\nImpact, simulated features are highly reactive to the actions of players.<br \/>\nDiversity, promoting the usage or more far-spread regions of the world, increasing needs for transport and collaboration, and allowing for myriad complex effects from different biomes.<br \/>\nExistential Threat, the ecology needs to be capable of dying and creating a losing world for players due to their actions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Government<\/strong><br \/>\nEase of use. All players should be capable of understanding and using the system.<br \/>\nPower. Many different and deep structures of government should be possible with the system.<br \/>\nCreated by Players. Government should be both run and constructed by players, allowing them to form it as a solution to their problems in the economy and in interactions with the ecosystem.<br \/>\nMeta-Game Support. Promotes the positive interaction of players in the meta game (active players coming and going, property arrangements, etc). Serves to handle problems that occur not just in the game but in the meta-game.<br \/>\nTransparent. The workings of government should be available and in fact highlighted for all players to see and participate in.<br \/>\nIterative. So, for making a good progress, crafting with this dump objects are necessary.<br \/>\n<strong>Story:<\/strong>\u00a0As the most of\u00a0<em>Naughty Dog<\/em>\u2019s videogames, the Story is one essential part in\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>.<br \/>\n<strong>AI partners:<\/strong>\u00a0The game is all about building a relationship between the player\u2019s character with the AI partners you meet throughout your journey.<br \/>\n<strong>Stealth:<\/strong>\u00a0Combat is used in this game, but if you avoid it, the game can be a lot easier and comfortable. So, the player is encouraged to play more stealthily.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/blogs\/MaxPears\/20171012\/307469\/Design_Pillars__The_Core_of_Your_Game.php\">From Max Pears Articl<\/a>e, presumably not internal<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild\"><em>Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1581\" src=\"http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/1793.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/1793.png 890w, http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/1793-300x180.png 300w, http:\/\/mycours.es\/gamedesign2021\/files\/2021\/09\/1793-768x461.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Exploration:<\/strong> Players are encouraged to explore, by being able to go to any area they wish whenever they wish (Once they have finished the tutorial) the designers have hidden certain information from the player compared to Ubisoft open world games, where they litter the player\u2019s HUD with side missions. Meaning players have to look for these.<br \/>\n<strong>Traversal<\/strong>: BoW offers so many modes of transport, each being as fun as one another. From, climbing, swimming, running, paragliding to the amazing shield surfing. Moving through this world is made into a fantastic experience through the diversity and (sorry for lack of a better word) fun of the movement in the world.<br \/>\n<strong>Scavenging:<\/strong> Players are constantly needing to go through the world and search for items. From weapons which break after a few battles, to the food players must use to regain health or help them traverse through all kind of environmental hazards.<br \/>\n<strong>Options:<\/strong> This game is praised all around for a number of options that are given to the player. From multiple ways to solve puzzles to the combat scenarios or how the player makes their way around the world. Anything the player can think of in terms of trying, the most likely will be able to do it. Compared to most games, there is no one way to solve the issues, which is laid in front of the player.<br \/>\n<strong>Combat:<\/strong> I see this as one of the lesser pillars for this game personally. Now you have loads of combat in this game and a number of enemy types but again my personal opinion is that the combat is not the most amazing combat system out there. The rhythm of dialogs, events, music.<br \/>\n<strong>Combat:<\/strong> each enemy has a different fighting minigame related to the character.<br \/>\n<strong>Characters:<\/strong> During the game, the player will meet a lot of different characters. Enemies, bosses, NPCs\u2026 all have a different personality and are unique.<br \/>\n<strong>Choice:<\/strong> Undertale is a game that gives you the chance of forgiving every beaten enemy.
