{"id":1141,"date":"2026-01-15T14:15:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T14:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mycours.es\/postgaming\/?page_id=1141"},"modified":"2026-04-17T14:11:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T14:11:58","slug":"assignment-micro-games","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mycours.es\/postgaming\/assignment-micro-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Assignment: Micro Games + System Safari"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Create 7 non-digital games, ideally at least one every day.<\/p>\n<p>They have to be playable with no props or few commonly available object.<br \/>\nThey must be described by a concise ruleset (100 words or less).<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They must have a title.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to make at least:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One game that can be played in class in a couple of minutes (it will be critiqued).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One game that must be played every day or for a long time.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One game that uses an existing technological system (phone, app, messaging, social media).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One game that plays with a specific element of the environment.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One game that is (almost?) impossible to play but interesting to think about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post them on discord as individual posts, at least one each day over the course of the week.<br \/>\nReact and comment on your classmates\u2019 games.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Exercise: System Safari<\/h3>\n<p>Games are almost always inspired by real world systems, objects, activities.<\/p>\n<p>In groups of three, armed with notepads and phones for documentation, walk around the College of Fine Arts hunting for behaviors, objects, environments with game-like affordances.<\/p>\n<p><em>&gt; What are everyday things and activities that can be gamified?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Think of the children game &#8220;Don&#8217;t step on the cracks&#8221;, a gamified version of walking.<br \/>\nThe cracks on the sidewalk or the space between tiles are suggesting rules.<br \/>\nThe parents rushing the child\/player\/designer around add an element of challenge.<\/p>\n<p><em>&gt; Choose a trivial action, activity, or goal, and add an unnecessary obstacle or constraint that makes it compelling and gamelike.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Games are &#8220;The voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles&#8221;<br \/>\n-Bernard Suits (1978)<\/p>\n<p>Think about most sports and physical games like golf.<br \/>\nYou have to put the ball in the hole BUT only by hitting it with the club.<\/p>\n<p><em>&gt; Does the obstacle or &#8220;gamification&#8221; make the activity more compelling or just more annoying?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Does it produce a dynamic that is interesting aesthetically?<br \/>\nCan player get better at it or compete with each other?<br \/>\nDoes it make the player see the object, behavior, or space in a different way?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Create 7 non-digital games, ideally at least one every day.
