Assignment:<\/strong> using any combination of techniques you learned this semester, create an experimental video piece based on a short text.<\/p>\n

The text must not<\/strong> be a story in the conventional sense. We are trying to avoid narrative filmmaking (which we haven’t covered) and use video as tool for artistic research and experimentation.<\/p>\n

The text can be written by you, somebody you know, or quoted\/borrowed from any source.<\/p>\n

Some examples of text:
\na monologue
\na manifesto
\na guide
\na diary entry
\nan interview
\na letter
\nan essay
\na poem
\nan excerpt from a non-fiction book
\na computer generated text
\na cut-up\/mashup of different texts
\na journalistic article<\/p>\n

The text can be delivered through voice or words on screen.<\/p>\n

The video should complement the text and not merely illustrate it in a redundant way.
\nThink of resonances, contrasts, and counterpoints, not just literal representations.<\/p>\n

Think about a key image that anchors the piece. Imagine it as a thumbnail on youtube, the poster of the short, or a promotional still. If you can’t come up with anything visually distinctive your text may not be appropriate for such a video treatment.<\/p>\n

The duration of the piece should be between 1 and 5 minutes, so the text has to be short.<\/strong> Try to read it very slowly keeping track of the time and see how much footage do you need to cover it.<\/p>\n

You can work in teams of maximum 2.<\/p>\n

Tuesday 11<\/strong>
\nBring 2 or 3 possible texts to class, with some related visual ideas (the key image, the process, the techniques…)
\nIn class you discuss the ideas with the teachers. We’ll choose the most promising and viable one.<\/p>\n

Thursday 13<\/strong>
\nThe idea is developed and storyboarded (if it applies) integrating feedback.
\nThe week by week production goals are negotiated in class on a project-by-project basis.
\nWork day.<\/p>\n

Storyboard<\/h3>\n

A storyboard is a shot by shot visual representation of your video.<\/p>\n

It typically includes dialogues, notes on movements, camera movements, sounds, and clearly represents frame compositions.
\nSo it’s important that the frames match your aspect ratio.<\/p>\n

They are usually in black and white and hand drawn:<\/p>\n

They don’t have to be beautifully drawn and detailed like a comic but they should provide information about camera angles, volumes, perspective and expressions – so no stick figures.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In animation they can get very detailed and contain information about timing. They can also be synched with rough voices (animatic<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\nIf you use a different template make sure the frame is consistent with the aspect ratio you are using: 16:9 or 1080 HD.<\/p>\n
