Assignment 4 – The Ruined Society

You have been sent to a deserted world to figure out what caused it’s collapse.  Press x to interact with objects and move with the arrow keys.  (Annoyingly, you have to use the mouse to click on message box options, I couldn’t figure out how to fix that.)  Download and play here if you’re on windows. (Game maker 8.1 can only make export as .exe.)

(To save you the trouble, getting 100% on the test does nothing, so don’t bother.  Also, there is no ending, so if you think you’ve explored everything, you’re probably done.  Ideally, this game would have more places to explore, less rushed backgrounds, and an introduction to establish the universe a bit.)

  1. It’s a frustrating to have the invisible walls, because I have no idea what I can and can’t pass through. Being able to travel diagonally wouldn’t be hard to implement and would make it easier to move around. Also, not sure if it’s a bug, but when I got to the second room, I was able to go down through an opening in the bottom and just… keep going offscreen with nothing happening. Is something supposed to happen there?

    1. Oh god I thought I blocked off all of the edges. D: Regarding the backgrounds, I tried to make it obvious where you could and couldn’t walk, but it could definitely only be obvious to me. (Also I had to make a border of obstacles around the rooms to prevent the walking off into oblivion thing so that might also contribute to it…

  2. I absolutely love the atmosphere you’ve created for your game. The art is beautiful, and the sci-fi world is very cohesive. There were lots of notice boards and things to examine, which revealed more and more information to me about the game world, but I’m still stumped about those puddles of blood. Also, at times, it was unclear where you could go. Overall, a very solid game.

  3. Really freaking cool how you were able to overlay the branches in the beginning with an alpha channel to establish both depth and player-tracking. It took me entirely too long to figure out that there was no end. I would have liked to have been able to move faster, but other than that it was pretty sweet.

  4. the imagery and the environment you established is really nice. Theres a really interesting something about this organic, beautiful tree place and some sort of administrative conspiracy/massacre. I wish the prompts didn’t tell you “this is full of jibberish” but instead had jibberish on it, like “mslis laisj. asjki eijkbls a;;alssli?” or something meow. otherwise it feels a little too heavy-handed, like your forcing the player to perceive things a certain way.

  5. I really like the art aesthetics and the interactions and plot and how hopeless and out of control the character is. I would love to see other NPC’s that you could interact with. I am also impressed with how much you got in. I like the music it fits the theme pretty well. However, from how you described the game which was really interesting is all lost in the demo, would love to see more.

  6. The aesthetic is really nice, I think you could make it a little more clear where the entrances and stuff are.
