In Search of Season

Hey Hey!!!!

this is the link to the gmk for my game ‘In Search of Season’ with slightly-editted music from The Ethnographers

it has been updated: better pixel ratio, and new content and continuity features!

left and right to move, up (however many times you want) to jump :]

make sure to right click and download the linked file.

in the future/with more time, I’d like to add more seasons and years.

enjoy!

  1. I think this was a really successful start. You really have something here, the environment is well done, the transition is very nice and adds a nice layer to the game. The jumping mechanic is intuitive and the way your level is laid out it forces the player to figure things out on their own. The music is calming and soothing which matches the environment. The character sticks to the environment quite a bit though and I could actually climb the end wall and fall over to the other side. I also felt as though it was lacking a bit. The character had a bow so I felt like something had to be used there and overall there was not much of a point to the game other than jumping your way over to the other end. However, I see this as an incredible first level to a remarkable game. The walking animation was quite nice.

    1. thanks!! I originally wanted to make a nice arrow-shooting platform mechanic, but that’s not happening. I just like the bow because i think it gives a little bit of character to the guy: a hunter who isn’t hunting

  2. Very well done. The animation and speed works well with the game style. I did not understand how the character was able to infinite jump. Once I started using this mechanic I lost a bit of connection to the details of the landscape you created. I did not like this disconnect. Who is the music artist? The soundtrack went rather well with the visual style. Will there be more seasons in the future? And does it have to only be one cycle or could small changes occur each year? Over all, great work.

    1. I’d like to continue making seasons, and yeah, different weather during different seasons/same seasons years later. More is good yeah yeah <3

    2. and the band is called The Ethnographers, the album: Dry Season. All the tracks are the instrumentals from that album

  3. This is just a beautiful game. I feel the environment as a character and I really appreciate what you have done in the game to make it this way. I do, however, pressure you to go forward with this idea of ‘environment as NPC’. Much the same as the potential of the environment, I see the weapon of the bow and such power needs to be used. I like this game a lot. It has such good basics and is an amazing foundation for a continuation.

  4. My favorite part was exploiting the movement bugs, got em to moon walk, then fly, then moonwalk across the tree tops. After doing silly things across the map about 5 times I found that though there was no goal, the visuals and smooth gameplay made it enjoyable enough to be fun without it. Assets very polished, like a ming vase!

    1. thanks Luke. yeah there’s no point :] thanks dude

  5. The moonwalk bug bothered me, but aesthetically this is a very beautiful piece. I wouldn’t call it a game, but I liked it.

  6. A real visual treat. The animation is crisp and well done. I am also skeptical about the character’s need for a bow if it isn’t going to be used, though.

  7. The pixel art is beautiful and the walking animation is very smooth. However, the character having a bow made me think that there were other controls besides walking. Also, the collision detection is a little weird when jumping (if the character is touching side of an obstacle, they won’t jump.) The music complemented the environment wonderfully.

    1. On the update: I like that you made it loop. I chased the glittering thing and eventually caught it by just standing still. Not sure if something was supposed to happen, but I liked the addition anyway. Glad to see the jumping thing I mentioned fixed though.

  8. I agree with the other comments the music and color palette worked very well together. The space reminded me somewhat of Sword and Sworcery. I agree that if you have a bow, it should be usable, but I’m sure you can add that in a future iteration.

  9. The visuals are super awesome plus the walking animation is really smooth, I’m wondering if there should be four seasons? Or I guess it’s just two times of the year when you can hunt? But any time is a good time to get game.

  10. The animation is super nice, I’m jelly. I also think the music that you used was really cool. I kept getting ‘stuck’ in the background when I tried to jump, which was slightly annoying. It’s fun to continuously jump and float into the air, though 😀 It would be interesting if you could use the bow, too, and maybe shoot little critters.

  11. Love the environment and the transition between scenes!
