Assignment 1: Jessica Tumarkin

Hello!

My completed game, “The Pointer”, is linked on the following page:

http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/jtumarki/project1.html

Description: You play a computer cursor who is a bit bored with their everyday life. One night, while ‘The Human’ is away, you decide to explore the depths of the file system. What kinds of documents and applications will you delve into? What sorts of characters will you encounter? There are many different options, so choose wisely!

Enjoy!

  1. Unfortunately short. Very cute and clever story. I wish you had more hand drawn images, though. The one you did really added to it.

  2. A really charming game filled with nostalgia. I played through a couple times but I seem to be only able to get neutral or bad ends.

  3. This is clever and fun! I found most of the endings a bit mundane, however, and think you might’ve been able to explore the psychology of either the mouse or the human further. For example, there could be a folder containing files that gives insight into their job, significant other, bank account, etc.

  4. Seconding the idea of using the computer to flesh out the human’s personality. Could be a neat exploration of how our computers reflect our personalities.

Good concept though. I managed to get a bluescreen while avoiding Clippy. CLIPPY WHY.

  5. Hm, i second the feeling of enjoyable nostalgia (I’m not ashamed of neopets). I found that I lacked control in certain parts (certain decisions led nowhere or circled back), which made if feel somewhat one-dimensional. However, good sense of progression happened when you added multiple options based on previous tasks (after you get Clippy you have more choices).

  6. Clippy was useful for a change, nice. I felt rather distressed about the Neopet. I was hoping to help it but there was no solution. It made me wonder if there was a special sequence of choices to make to help it or if it was doomed to be abandoned and eternally starving. Kinda sad. Very well crafted.

  7. For some reason I always liked the various Microsoft Office programs having animated characters for no real good reason. It was definitely heartwarming to have Clippy get a job where he was appreciated.

  8. Missing Mr. Clippy.. That is a nice connection.
The game ends very quickly if I choose to move down at first. It would be nice if the human can come back a little bit later.

  9. I don’t know, I guess I just made all the wrong choices. I found the erotica and then got blown up by a mine in minesweeper. I think the concept of the story was really cool – especially the idea of the human returning and taking control of the pointer, like how does the pointer react to that dominance in the relationship? As a game I felt like my character never really developed further than “oh, I’m free. Let’s explore the desktop.” But maybe if I had seen other endings there would have been more.

  10. Are there any “BAD END”s ?

I like the concept and the nostalgic aspect of it (Xanga, Clippy, etc.)

  11. Love the idea but it feels too short and with abrupt endings.
