Assignment 1 – “Respawn” by Clyde Shaffer

My interactive story “Respawn” is located at http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/cshaffer/Respawn/

In “Respawn” you take on the role of a grizzled mercenary character in a multiplayer action shooter. What tactics will you use? What things will you do with your power?

These are things you choose, so I can’t really say what they will be. You must discover these yourself!

  1. So many references. Goodness.

I kind of want to see this actually happen in some massive FPS, maybe for April Fool’s or something.

  2. At first I thought this was going to be a basic strategy game where you were a soldier the entire time and you just picked how to move and who to shoot. You threw me for a loop with the next parts, but I ended up really liking it. The idea of being characters that are just minuscule parts of the ‘game of life’, and then ‘zooming out’ to become bigger and bigger players until you’re the entire Earth, is nice and I like how it was executed. There were a lot of funny parts too.

  3. This is a novel concept and very funny to the end. However, many of the choices and classes felt random (a spider checking Facebook, for example) and so I didn’t get much from the experience other than entertainment. If the classes could have related more to the design of a traditional FPS and made some comment on them, it might’ve had more meaning.

  4. I was confused at first because I didn’t expect it to take the turns it did but the references were pretty fun to read. It was frustrating, however, to be given all of the weapons options and find they were all “full”

  5. The beginning felt very generic but then it quickly became much more entertaining. Being based around a FPS concept, I expected something darker, but the humor was a pleasant surprise.

  6. I really really enjoyed this game. Being a spider in a warzone was a brilliant class, and it’s basically how I play fps’s anyways. The only thing I would change would be to maybe have more than one “life” as a playable class to make the bonus class selection even more surprising.

  7. That was rather funny, well done. The first choice made me laugh because I decided to throw the grenade into the room expecting to take out my whole team or something like that. Next thing I know I am a spider…awesome! I enjoyed seeing the world from different nonhuman vantage points and the breath of the story is quite amazing. I liked how the story was linear with choices inside a focused direction. I wonder how it would be if you could construct multiple lines from the start rather than one ultimate ending. Nicely done.

  8. I feel like the game was a little confusing by telling people to select a class and it not ever being accessible. I wanted more player choices instead of being led down a rather straight path. This does not stop the fact that this game was cool as hell. The Island chain was absolutely hilarious and fun to play.

  9. Quirky and entertaining. Some parts (the spider Facebook thing) are a bit off and the class order could easily be made non-linear. Maybe only the earth class is locked until you play all the other ones.
