Team Bueno revisits the Forest – An Update

<3 Hey Team Bueno Fans,

So an update:

  • Though it breaks a small section of our cardioid muscle, infinite jump is gone/fixed. He jumps like a normal man now. A normal hunterman.
  • Normal hunterman jumping means normal hunterman-friendly environments. The first two levels have been augmented to accomodate for his lack of ups.
  • Sprites are being reconsidered, and ways are being made in terms of narrative/plot: we’re thinking that if there is a deer, it will be one that travels near to you, though not companion style. There will be various characters you will interact with/can talk to
  • The bow will shoot! killing things lets you decide how the narrative develops as you visit and revisit areas

okay so

Was told to either go with one of three aspects of the wolf game, or else update an older project. Since I can’t separate two of the aspects of the wolf game without giving myself a headache (and since it looks like I’ll be the one doing the models for my final for my other game class) it’s time to UPDATE ASSIGNMENT 4.

So basically what I had for A4 was a platformer with three levels, two endings, and a funny texting mechanic that decided which levels you got. More importantly, I had all the code for that stuff; I was just missing the comic panel intro/outro that I had wanted. Which makes the updating part largely a matter of level design. I want more levels. Specifically I want eight of them. I already have three, which will survive with some minor updating. So there’s design and art for that. Other stuff to make:

–Probably a few more varieties of movable object. The code for that is all there, so this is just a matter of drawing the things and fussing with the speed and acceleration values.
–Level selection: Going to make it explicitly based on player choice; at the end of each level you can pick one of two possible levels to progress to. What ending you get depends on the order and number of levels you play. Some levels may not appear as options if you don’t check your texts. There wind up being (in the configuration I’ve come up with for now) 7 different paths through the game.
–Those damn Flash comic pages that I wanted to do and then I was too busy running around labs because my laptop died and didn’t have time to draw.
–Probably another type of basic enemy that uses the existing basic enemy code.
–I lied about not having to code anything. I want to make the final boss suck a bit less than it currently does. So that’s a little bit of debugging. Oh well.

But mostly I have to draw a lot of things.

Alex Update

Based on the suggestions from last time, I changed the premise of the astronaut game. Now, you’re floating through a starfield. I don’t know if there will be any objectives or things to collect. There are some moving diagrams that you pass through (see below), each of which loosely contains a line from a poem I’ve made from quotes on the Internet. The player can thus read the poem in any order. I don’t like the game as it is so far, and think I might switch to my previous train game instead, as this doesn’t seem to be very interesting.

Washington Part I: 14 Stars and Stripes – An episodic adventure through time

So here is the second iteration of the story of George Washington. One of the founding fathers, expert tree chopper, and time traveling hero.

Before we begin I want to clarify a few things. I want the game to be like playing through a storyline. That being said, I think that multiple endings wouldn’t be the best thing. I think that activating multiple timelines by George traveling back and forth would be an awesome event to happen.

The story so far… is the First 2 chapters of the game.

Preface: George Washington has made the United States a country by defeating the British in the American Revolution. In appreciation and admiration of this new country he sets out to cross the Ohio river in search of more lands and peoples that boarder this great nation. However, unbeknownst to George, he is traveling aboard a secret British time travel ship that takes him to 1771, a few years pre-revolution along the Eastern Colonies starting in Massachusetts.

CHAPTER1: He is confused, but being his bad-ass self he continues on in search of answers to why he is back in time and why he is here. He solves small puzzles and traverses ice caps. He fights bears, wolves, and stops the American colonies from going to battle with the French claims of Canada by showing them how WONDERFUL maple syrup is.

CHAPTER2: Travel to Boston and distribute the syrup to everyone you find. Avoid angry British soldiers and get to the docks to help the WONDERFUL syrup to the rest of the colonies. During his fateful travels to Boston he is confronted by a sea captain at the dock. George makes small talk and gives him some syrup and they hit it off as friends. This captain ends up being a captain of one of the time travel ships. It is revealed that he has helped shape history through use of this special ship and that another is being built at the intersection of the 3 rivers. The same on that will end up taking him back in time in the first place.

Character list

-The Cherry Tree – A tree who tells George that he has been taken back in time. (actually George Washington traveling back in time to tell himself (you) about the time traveling incident)

-Baby George – young Mohawk boy who leads Washington around the game. He initiates new places to go and is a waypoint after major advances in story.

-Ben Franklin/Big Foot- Helps you get all of the gifted maple syrup out of the French Claims of Canada and back to the farms on the frontier.

-Nathanael Green- On the frontier. He takes the maple syrup from you. He was preparing an attack on the Canadian lands, but the syrup makes him and his troops so happy that they decide that Canada is better off being left alone and that he would travel South.

-Sam Adams- In Boston. He leads you to the Quartermaster and informs you of the sketchy British ship and it’s captain on the harbor. Is also super drunk and wants to create a beer labeled after himself.

-Benedict Arnold- Is the British ship captain. This is of course a surprise to George, as Benedict Arnold is a traitor to the Continental Army. He gives up information on the time traveling ship on the Ohio. The game ends with the decision to kill him before he can defect to the British.

Cancer Ransom

Countries and activists bid for the rights to the players newly discovered cure to cancer.  Will you give in to unimaginable wealth or

The player is the genius that has discovered a stable cure for cancer.  Many have tried to find this solution with dire consequences that have taken its toll on humanity.  Now having proven your success the world is at your mercy.  The countries that remain on

Mio

I want to create a virtual therapy experience that will try to help guide users with personal problems through the use of various techniques including cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology, perceptual change, sensory experiences, changing of perceived reality and others.

The therapist is virtual and will tell you that he is indeed a programmed software designed to feel human and that this is so that you, the user will actually allow yourself to believe the illusion that you are being treated by a real therapist. “Only if you believe this illusion, will you be able to trust me, the system, that I might indeed be able to help you with something that is troubling to you.” So by the time you enter the system, you know everything, your choice is whether or not you want to jump and take the leap of faith under the assumptions that one, it might not work and two, that whoever made this character, was a human so his thinking is projected in the character you are interacting with which makes this character not entirely non-human.

It uses the structure shared by many problems (cause, perception, wishes, reality, emotions, imagination, multi-perspectives, and others) to attempt to guide you into fixing the problem at least a little bit, it is designed to try to help the player deal with something real in a way that is very real and fake but more importantly, helpful.

It is a game that will hopefully be uplifting to the players, it will at least attempt to help you see a problem in a way that is not as stressful to you. Mio will be like anyone else, opinionated, it will have its own biases which will be my biases (I’ll try to not have them but it will have them). It tries to treat the user with as much respect and it tries to have a real conversation with you and tries to guide you in what it thinks is right.

“Hello there, I am Mio”
“Although I am a computer software, I have been programmed to feel human. You see, what I say I mean and I am created to try to help”
“I have this idea that I can help guide you through a problem you might be having if I choose the right questions and responses.”
“My belief, is that most issues arise from a similar place, a perception of misalignment”

Final Ideas Update – Melissa, Ariel, Will

Working off our first and third ideas.

Idea 1 split screen long distance relationship puzzle game where text messages between the characters prompt the player to find the solution to either save or split the couple.  The puzzles are solved by moving objects between the two sides of the screen

Idea 3 mobile game. you as the player have found a lost phone. Your task is to return it to the owner by using the information you gather – reading this person’s texts, fb messages, emails, or looking at her/his pictures – to determine where this person may be. You must physically i.e. IRL go to the building suggested by the clues to progress in the game.

Da Proposal

So I want my game to center around the simple theme of drug addiction and relapse.

My goal is to have at least 7 levels. In each level, you control a character I can only describe at this point as a drug addict, moving through various environments trying to find your way through the next. There will be moving obstacles in the form of pills/ pill bottles, as well as other objects which will help aid you on the path to “rehab” (don’t know what they will be yet). The character will have a health bar, and with every pill/ bottle you hit, your health decreases. The “helpful” objects, when collected, will increase your character’s speed so it’s easier to move through each level.

Your character starts out slow as molasses, and the environments and objects start out as completely blurry and distorted, and as you progress through each level the images become more and more clear so it’s easier to find out what you can collect and what you’re supposed to avoid.

The final level, where everything is crystal clear, will have either some giant obstacle or an obstacle disguised as something helpful, which, upon contact, will restart you at the first level, thus demonstrating a “relapse.”

I don’t know how much of this I should reveal, but there’s only one way you can exit the game.

Link to previous game, not 100% finished but still has most of the mechanics I want to incorporate: https://www.dropbox.com/s/p4l2ykzsj2e790d/testfatty2.gmk

Final Project Prosposals

I have four ideas for what I would want to do for my final project:

1) Expand upon my first project in undum, by integrating the letters better into the story as per comments on my post, and by adding illustrations.

2) Expand upon my first project in renpy or gamemaker, and making it a point-and-click adventure.  In this one, you would be able to travel through the different rooms of the house as different characters and you have to find all the letters.

3)  Expand upon my fourth project which can be download here: http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/elazrus/Games/SnowGlobe/.

4) Pursue a new project that was inspired my my fourth project.  I like the idea of needing to interact with the room(s) from both a zoomed in and zoomed out perspective, each of which corresponds to a different character.  Instead of a snowglobe though I would use a doll house, so that you play as the little girl who’s doll house it is and as the dolls within the house.  When you play as the girl, you can move around the furniture (and the dolls?) by pointing and clicking and when you play zoomed in as the doll(s), you interact with the different rooms using the keyboard, like with a platformer.  I’m still debating if this game would be a puzzle game that had an actual goal/ending or if it would be more of a toy that you can play with as the two types of characters.

Nathan and George Washington make some games with time travel and stuff… oh and JFK shows up too with some beers and bros out.

I have completely finished the story and completed simple concept maps (levels and such) for 2 of 3 chapters of the video game along with some dialoge elements 🙂

I will post my simple storyboards when I get time and after I scan them in.

That being said… here is the final storyline and alternate timeline for the American History.

SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILERS:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILERS:SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:

CHAPTER1: George Washington has made the United States a country by defeating the British in the American Revolution. In appreciation and admiration of this new country he sets out to cross the Ohio river, South of Fort BadLuck, in search of more lands and peoples that boarder this great nation. However, unbeknownst to George, he is traveling aboard a secret British time travel ship that takes him to pre-revolution times along the Eastern Colonies. He is confused, but being his bad-ass self he continues on in search of answers to why he is back in time and why he is here. Along the way he meets many people and trees.

George kills him in anger as it is revealed that he has helped shape history through use of this special ship and that another is being built at the intersection of the 3 rivers.

CHAPTER3a: George runs to the Ohio River (wolves and Big Foot along the way) to find the ship under construction by super advanced technology (replaceable parts, a factory, welders, workers in masks ect… like technology from the 1920’s) and the leader is actually the King of the New Britain, from the year 2095. He boards his escape ship and ends up in 1962 in the secret time room of JFK.

CHAPTER3b: Washington meets and is greeted by JFK. He informs JFK of the potential loss of the revolution because of his time travel and JFK offers his help. The US in 1962 has established time travel but at a cost… The user must travel and his current body and mind must die so that he can appear in the past.  JFK’s final words in the game are “Let us kill me now so I can save our past”. Screen goes black.

FINAL: George and JFK stand upon a field of battle with the british in retreat…. JFK looks at George and says “I know of a place where there was sent a USA time squad. Can you come help the future?” George-“I think I cannot. The country needs me now. Thank you friend”. JFK-“I understand. Well done. I must travel again to the future. To a time further than my time. I think this country may need saving more than once. Everyone hates the winner” HIGH-FIVE MOTHER FUCKERS. GAME OVER.

MECHANICS I WANT TO IMPLEMENT

HEALTH. A health bar and a health status bar. I don’t plan for fighting in game but this is for bears, wolves, hurtful words, and stuff like that.

TREASURE. Bits of paper/gold that can be read that reveal a crazy time traveling British empire and their future escalation of a time traveling power-struggle of the future.

NARRATOR:  Omniscient woman (who I have cast already) to help the story along between chapters. Also to read signs out loud. Ends up being the voice of JFK as well.

I want this to be ridiculous and funny. I think that the escape from reality and hilarity will be the culmination of what this game is about.

IMPORTANT NOTE:    Also… I want to make an Arcade Machine for this. Very basic. Made of MDO/MDF/Plywood on the CNC router. Decorated in the Stripes and Stars of America and covered with beautiful glossy finish. I have already started the file and will talk literally 8 minutes to cut and some assembly will be required.
